OVERVIEW

St Moritz lies in the Engadin valley in the South East corner of the Swiss Alps with a snow sure elevation by the lake area, at 3,305m. It incorporates 88 excellent ski pistes over 350km, for skiing, snowboarding and groomed pistes for cross country skiing. The St Moritz ski area includes Corviglia, Corvatsch, Diavolenzza/Lagalb and Zuoz as well as six smaller areas.

St Moritz is recorded as being one of the first ski resorts to be established and considered one of the top luxury resorts in the world with five star hotels and Michelin starred restaurants, frequented by the rich and famous. Two Winter Olympics have been held here in 1928 and 1948. It boasts the world famous Cresta Run, made of natural ice, an outdoor Olympic ice rink, and the frozen lake which hosts polo, cricket and even horse riding events. Back in September 1864 Hotelier Caspar Badrutt challenged four British summer tourists to return in the winter, if they weren’t impressed by the scenery he would pay their travel fees, if they were impressed by the scenery they could stay as his guests for as long as they liked, of course they stayed and this marked the beginning of winter tourism, not only in St Moritz but in the Swiss Alps themselves. The first tourist office in Switzerland opened in St Moritz the same year, but it wasn’t until 1929 that the first ski school was established.

Corviglia Slope

Corviglia is the most convenient slope to get to in St Moritz, which has an elevation of 2,486m. With a good beginner's area, excellent for intermediates with its long sweeping runs and also incorporates some black runs. However, due to its easy accessibility from the other villages it’s often prone to overcrowding, so it’s worth exploring other parts of the ski area too, especially at weekends.

Corvatsch Slope

Corvatsch’s north facing slopes have an elevation of 3,541m with breathtaking views over the mountains and the lakes below.  It offers a multitude of skiing, lots of powder for intermediates and advanced skiers, and a half pipe for those with a penchant for dare devilling. The easy slope at the base is perfect for beginners too. The glacier stands at 3,305m with permanent snow shoeing trails, and free-riding areas and excellent snow for the off piste skier. The famous Hannesnee run is a must for the adventurous. Pedestrians and touring skiers are strictly forbidden to walk on the Corvatsch slopes.

Diavolezza/Lagalb Slopes

Diavolezza, translated into English mean’s female devil. The glacier at 3066m, has a large expanse for off-piste skiing, and a guide is highly recommended for this ski area. Diavolezza is connected to the slopes of Lagaib and the summit is reached by a cable car. For adventurous skiers there are both red and black runs. Both of these destinations can be reached from St Moritz by train and ski bus.

Zuoz

Zuoz sits at an altitude of 1,716m, popular with the locals and it offers ideal skiing for beginners and families that don’t want the full on apres ski holiday. It also boasts enough intermediate runs for the more experienced skier, reached from St Moritz by ski bus and train.

Dorf/St Moritz Bad/Celerina

Dorf, St Moritz Bad and Celerina offer 4 & 5 star hotels in quieter locations within 5km of St Moritz. Ski lifts take you to the base of the ski slopes, at Corviglia, 2486m, where there are trains and ski buses to connect you to other ski runs in the St Moritz area.
